Valparaiso University's Chinese and Japanese Studies Program invites undergraduate and graduate students of all majors to apply to participate in the China Summer 1 study abroad program. As part of this program, students will be able to earn credit, and have the option to complete an internship.

While, the group is based in Hangzhou, the site of one of Valpo's four study centers, students will participate in several excursions to other Chinese cities during the five-week program.


All students will enroll in the faculty leader's course (China Summer 1 Required Course Description.docx) as either English, History, East Asian or Christ College credit. Students will be able to partially satisfy a humanities or cultural diversity general education requirement.

Students also have the option to add a full summer online course (MGT 390CHOLX/EAST 390CHOLX/ICP 690CHOLX) taught by Professor Paul Trapp called Globalization: Challenges and Promises for three credits. This course counts as an upper level division business elective. All majors are welcome, but business majors taking the course must have at least junior standing.

China SmokFor the internship opportunity, students may enroll in one of the following:    
  • COMM 386: Supervised Internship - 3 cr.
  • EAST 386: Internship in CJS Studies - 3 cr.
  • MGT 395/397/398: Internship in Business Administration I, II, III - 1-2 cr. (requires College of Business approval)
  • ICP 686: ICP Internship - 3 cr. (requires Graduate School approval)
  • For internship courses listed under other majors, contact the appropriate department chair for approval.

Students may also request to complete an independent study. Contact your advisor for details on whether this would be an option and how to arrange it with Valpo faculty.


Program dates for Summer 2018 are tentatively May 22 - June 26, 2018.

Application Requirements and Deadlines

The deadline to apply for the Summer 2018 will be March 1st. Applications will be reviewed by the Program Leader alongside the Office of International Programs study abroad staff after the deadline has passed. Once a decision has been made, applicants will be notified via their Valpo e-mail.

Cost Information

Students pay tuition at the summer per-credit rate as well as a program fee that includes accommodation, airfare, in-country transportation, some meals, excursions and faculty support.

Students should also budget for personal expenses. The estimate for spending money will vary greatly depending on personal spending habits. This would include personal items, additional personal travel, restaurant meals, shopping, and other activities such as going to movies, concerts, etc. This estimate found in the budget sheet is based on average spending and students should estimate for themselves based on their individual spending habits.

Apply for a Passport

Passports need to be valid for at least six months past the program’s end date. As part of the application, students must upload a copy of a valid passport, or a receipt or similar proof that the student has submitted a passport application.
