Academic Program Overview

Reutlingen IO3

Valparaiso International Engineering Program (VIEP – German) Program is a nine-semester B.S. degree program that combines a major in one of four engineering disciplines (civil, computer, electrical or mechanical), a major or minor in German, and one academic year of study and work in Germany. The program allows students to gain linguistic and cultural proficiency in the German language and prepares them for careers with German or U.S. companies that operate globally.

VIEP – German students fulfill the following requirements:

  • German language, literature, and culture courses integrated into the regular engineering curriculum beginning in the third semester
  • One year study and work abroad in Germany
  • Live in the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center for at least two semesters

VEIP–German is coordinated jointly by the College of Engineering and the German section of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Students who wish to pursue VIEP-German should see their engineering adviser and a German instructor as early as possible.

Study Abroad Program Overview

As one of Valpo's oldest study abroad programs, the Study Center in Reutlingen, Germany, where the VIEP-German program is based, offers a well-established curriculum as well as an on-site Resident Director who teaches some program courses and also coordinates group excursions and cultural activities. The learning experience extends far beyond the classroom walls. Approximately two weeks of the program will be devoted to group trips. Past destinations have included Berlin and Munich, as well as extended visits to eastern German cities like Dresden, Leipzig, Weimar, Eisenach, and Wittenberg. The Resident Director also works to include students in local festivals and holiday celebrations.

Germany is a modern country packed with a rich history, long-standing traditions and it plays a critical role in the European economy. With world-class public transportation, exploring Germany and Europe is easy and affordable.

Reutlingen is a town of about 95,000 located in southwest Germany near Stuttgart. It is located between the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura - both areas of geographic interest and beauty. The town's center boasts remnants of a city wall and medieval fortifications. Students can walk through lovely residential areas and a park on their way from campus to downtown (about a 20-minute walk) or take the bus. There they will find many restaurants, shops, cafes and more.

During the first semester, students are housed in modern dormitories on the campus of the Hochschule where they take courses. Each floor has a shared kitchen which provides the opportunity to make friends with German and international students from around the world at Reutlingen University. Classes are held within easy walking distance of the dormitories.

Reutlingen University is one of Germany’s leading universities, offering international academic programs with close ties to industry and commerce. The student population is 5,500 across five different Schools: Applied Chemistry, Engineering, ESB Business School, Informatics, and Textiles & Design.  Reutlingen offers 43 degree programs at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, in which they train the top executives of the future. At the same time it is very important to Reutlingen University to support students’ personal development and to ensure that they become specialists and managers for whom social responsibility is second nature.

VIEP-German students complete an internship or co-op during the second semester of their time in Germany. Students have excellent resources at the Hochschule that will be available to assist them with internship placements. If their placement is outside of Reutlingen, the program will also work to secure appropriate accommodation closer to the location of the placement.

During this semester students enroll in a 12 credit placeholder to ensure they maintain full-time student status and courses/grades are added retro-actively once the transcript/grade information is received post-program. Students typically take a combination of language courses, content courses through the Hochschule and Center courses. For the internship semester, students should follow instructions from their academic advisors to ensure requirements are met including enrollment at Valpo.

During the first semester, students arrive around the same time as the center students for orientation and to begin language and center courses. Hochschule courses begin a little later - end of September/early October and end in February.  The internship/co-op semester beings shortly afterwards and typically ends in June/July.

Application Requirements and Deadlines

Click the "Apply Now" button at the top of this page to begin an application.

Cost Information

Please refer to the budget sheet above.

Students pay the same tuition and general fee as they would during a semester on-campus at Valpo. All financial aid (except work-study and some 'on-campus' aid) applies. Be sure to meet with your Financial Aid Advisor to determine the exact cost. For the first semester, housing is paid to Valpo at a flat rate equivalent to the lowest rate on campus. Participants are housed in double rooms in modern dormitories on the Hochschule campus with our Valpo students. Kitchens are located on each floor and there is also a cafeteria offering affordable meal options. During the second semester, it is paid directly to the housing provider.

Out-of-Pocket Expenses
Students will be responsible for purchasing their own airfare. The OIP Study Abroad is happy to offer support as necessary including soliciting quotes for flights from a travel agent, and/or connecting students with reputable travel agents.

The estimate for spending money will vary greatly depending on personal spending habits. This would include personal items, additional personal travel, restaurant meals, shopping, and other activities such as going to movies, concerts, etc. The estimate found in the budget sheet is based on average spending, and students should estimate for themselves based on their individual spending habits.

Start your scholarships & funding search as early as possible so that you are able to plan and ensure you are able to meet any deadlines. Your study abroad advisor can also help you with brainstorming potential resources as well.
