Scholarships Description

Endowed scholarships are set up through the generosity of donors with the goal of assisting our students. In the case of these specific scholarships, they are given to provide assistance to students planning to study abroad. The current endowed scholarships that are available are:

Robert & Kathleen Hansen Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad
The Robert & Kathleen Hansen Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad was established to provide scholarship assistance to students enrolled at Valparaiso University who are in good standing and who participate in one of the University's study abroad opportunities. Awards are to be used to meet expenses incurred due to their participation in said program.

Wallace L. Pretzer Study Abroad Scholarship
The Wallace L. Pretzer Study Abroad Scholarship Fund provides one award to a junior or senior domestic Valparasio University student, and the other to an international student attending VU. First preference for international students shall be for a student from China. These awards are based on financial need of the students.

C-27 Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
The C-27 Study Abroad Scholarship Fund provides scholarship assistance to students in good standing for use in any of the semester abroad programs approved by the University. If no semester abroad applicants are available, then applicants for other study abroad programs may be considered, including summer and spring break offerings.

There may be others depending on availability.

This universal application allows students to apply online for all available endowed scholarships. To do so, hit "Apply Now" above and submit the one required essay. Be sure to follow the prompts and proofread your essay before submitting. Be sure to submit your application by the deadline - applications will not be reviewed after the deadline has passed.

Additionally, only students with complete study abroad applications will be considered for a scholarship award. Please apply for the term that corresponds to the term you will be studying abroad.

For Summer, Fall semester or the Academic Year programs, the application will open early in January when classes begin for the new semester with a deadline of March 1.

For Spring semester and Spring Break, the application will open in early August prior to the start of the Fall semester. The deadline to submit an Endowed Scholarships application for Spring semester study abroad will be October 1, and the deadline for Spring Break study abroad will be October 15.

Funds are limited, and application does not guarantee an award.

Notification and Disbursement Information

After the deadline, applications will be reviewed by the Office of International Programs and the Financial Aid Office to evaluate applications and make awards. We will do our best to send out decision notifications as quickly as possible.

This award is considered Financial Aid. As such, it will be posted to your student account and follow the policies and timelines of your usual financial aid disbursement, which typically happens at the start of the Valpo semester. If you have any questions about your financial aid package overall, disbursement, or any other financial aid matters, please contact your Financial Aid Advisor.

Those selected to receive the award must consent to having their name shared with the donor, making every effort to attend events on campus in honor of the donors, and should send them a thank-you. Instructions on how to do so will be shared along with award notifications.
